FAQS

Why are your candles more expensive than candles I see at grocery, drug, and mass market chain stores?

It's easy to make a candle. Just melt some wax, scent it, add a wick, color and pour into a container or mold.. It's very hard to make a QUALITY candle. We focus on fragrance performance. We spend thousands of dollars and hours testing the right wick combinations for optimum fragrancing and the right wax formula to create what we believe is superior to that of the major brands on the market.

Our candles are made from high melt-point, long-burning wax. Our soy and palm waxes are extremely long burning. Our candles are also tested and re-tested. All are handmade, with love, in the USA. They also contain premium high quality fragrances, as opposed to lower quality artificial scents like those found in cheaper candles.

What’s the difference between soy wax and paraffin?

Paraffin is the most common type of wax used in candles today, and has been used for over 100 years. It is a petroleum product and is highly refined. Vegetable waxes, such as soy which is made from soybean oil and palm which comes from palm oil are born in nature. are biodegradable and are made from renewable resources.

While any candle can be poorly engineered so as to create soot, vegetable waxes tend to be easier to make clean burning than paraffin, and thus generally tend to burn cleaner. However, the cleanliness of the burn and the purity of the emissions has as much to do with the type and content of the fragrances or essential oils being used, and the choice of wicks, as it does with the type of wax. All candles will soot if not burned properly. Keep your wick trimmed, and keep your candle away from drafts.

If you prefer to give your “dollar vote” to soybean farmers or palm growers, as opposed to multi-national petroleum corporations, vegetable waxes are the choice for you.

We focus on premium fragrance. That's where the expense is.  We DON'T focus on fancy packaging.  You candle comes with a removable hang tag in a plain recycled paper box.

How can I get the strongest scent "throw" from my candle?

Your candle will have the strongest scent when in has a full melt pool.  Most candles are designed to burn just over 1 hour per inch in diameter. Our candles are designed to burn for approximately 3-4 hours (at a time/or use). If a candle is burned for periods less than what it was designed, the candle will start to 'tunnel' (burning a hole down the center leaving much wax unused).

What if my candle is smoking?

If one of our candle flames is smoking, it is not burning efficiently. What you are seeing is carbon that is not able to burn off because the flame is too big or is in a draft. Remove the candle from the draft and/or trim the wick. As a general rule, wicks should be trimmed every 3-4 hours of burning.  If your candle starts burning to one side, adjust the wick or check for a draft. Any candle flame can smoke if the flame is not burning efficiently. Our candles will not smoke if you take proper care of the wicks.

All candle wicks will smoke if they are extinguished improperly. Use a snuffer, or push the wick into the wax and then pull it up again after it is extinguished.

Container candle wicks should be trimmed to a 1/8 inch every time before you light your candle.

You can use a scissors, nail clipper, or candle wick cutters.  Your best option is to use a candle wick cutter called the Candle Quencher.
